I hadn’t seen Matt Wasowski play in almost a decade and his skills kind of crushed me. I went because an old college friend leads the Portland Rhumba Project. Tuesday’s show was a killer first step - the crowd was small, but it was bigger than any August Tuesday crowd I’ve seen at the Lizard. Kina Zore frontman Helder Tsinine told me the residency is beginning of a campaign to bolster Boston’s African music movement. Launched Tuesday with Kina Zore and the Portland Rhumba Project, and continuing every Tuesday in August, the African Music Night spotlights Afropop, Senegalese’ mbalax, djembe drumming and loads more genres.
But the Cambridge club and booker Billy Beard do make world-wide sonic exploration a priority - next week alone has the Mmere Dané Group, Lookie Lookie, Club d’Elf and the continuation of Kina Zore’s August residency. Moroccan folk, UK breakbeats, jazz fusion, Middle Eastern melodies and rock ‘n’ roll all have a home at the Lizard (OK, fine, they all have a home in one Lizard residency: Friday’s with Club d’Elf).
No club pushes global mashups more than the Lizard Lounge.
